Upcoming Stories
Week of March 9, 2026
Dear all,
Here are the stories coming up this week:
Alice Roosevelt, Part III — Alice had spent her youth in the center of American political life, dazzling and scandalizing Washington in equal measure. But the most remarkable part of her story came later. This final part follows Alice through motherhood, personal losses, and the decades in which she became one of Washington’s most perceptive and sharp-tongued observers.
Niccolò Fontana — Amid the violence of war in early 1500s Italy, a young Niccolò was struck in the face by a soldier’s sword and left for dead. He survived, though the wounds left him with a lifelong speech impediment. Despite that challenge and a childhood of poverty, he went on to become one of the Renaissance’s most important mathematicians.
The Making of Central Park, Part II — After their design for a new park was chosen, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux faced the immense task of bringing it to life. What followed was one of the most ambitious urban projects of the nineteenth century. This installment traces how the two collaborators transformed a rocky stretch of Manhattan into Central Park.
Dorothy Hodgkin — Dorothy worked as a chemist at Oxford University, using X-rays to see how molecules are arranged. Her work revealed the structures of penicillin and vitamin B12 and later helped illuminate insulin. These discoveries transformed modern medicine.
In addition to the stories, the latest edition of the Historical Snapshots magazine will also be released. Here’s a preview of the cover:
Looking forward to sharing it all with you.
