John is only sixteen, but life has already carved its lessons into him, lessons usually reserved for grown men. He's learned that innocence is fragile, easily lost, and that the world doesn't care how young you are when it takes it from you. His eyes, once wide with curiosity, now carry the weight of what he's seen, what he's survived. And then there is the thick scar on his right cheek, which looks like a line drawn across a map, marking the spot where boyhood ended and something harder took its place.

The moment that changed everything happened in the woods, where the trees whispered and the world felt safe—until it wasn't. That day, four men attacked John and his father as the two were taking a leisurely walk. Father and son fought like their lives depended on it, because they did. And they won, but the fight cost John his father, and now that scar is a reminder of not just the battle, but the loss that came with it.

When his father died, the weight of John's world seemed to settle on the young boy's shoulders. Fifteen is far too young to be the man of the house, but life doesn't always wait until you're ready. The responsibility of looking after his mother and three younger sisters on this wild, untamed land became his. Along with it, he adopted his father's dream to carve out a life here, to turn this stretch of Kentucky wilderness into something they could call their own. "We have our own land now, son. Just like the aristocrats back home," his father used to say, pride shining in his bold blue eyes. His father had come to America with nothing but hope and hard work, and John was determined to see that desire fulfilled, no matter the cost. Because that's what you do when someone leaves you a dream—you carry it, even when it's heavy.

But fulfilling the dream did come with much hardship. This land, which his father had so eagerly claimed, came with many struggles. When the family arrived in early 1775, they were part of a group of pioneers with hopeful hearts pushing westward, believing they could carve out a new life with enough hard work and perseverance. The pioneers, though, weren't the first to call this place home. The Shawnee tribe was here before, and to them, this land wasn't just untamed wilderness waiting for a plow. It was sacred ground, rich with their people's history, culture, and spirit. The trees and rivers had stories, a significance that went deeper than the soil. To the Shawnee, the wave of settlers was a threat, a force that could erase everything they had known. What John's family saw as a new beginning, the Shawnee saw as something much darker. And so, tensions simmered, and conflict followed.

Now, as if life wasn't complicated enough, the world around them was also in turmoil. The colonies were teetering on the edge of a revolutionary war with Britain, and rumors spread that the British were telling the Native tribes to strike against the settlers, offering them back their land in exchange for loyalty. It was a bargain that stirred fear and uncertainty in every cabin on the frontier.

John had fallen in love with the sweet, earthy scent of Kentucky's maple trees long before he understood how treacherous the land could be. It happened early in the family's move, and even with the attack, his love for the forest had not waned.

Today's adventure into the forest is different, however. With a musket resting securely in the crook of his arm, John moves carefully through the thick undergrowth, his mind focused on the task at hand—hunting for a meal to bring back to his mother and sisters. But there's a gnawing feeling in his gut that he can't shake. The forest feels too still, like it's holding its breath, waiting for something to happen. It's the kind of quiet that makes your heart beat louder, that wraps around you like a blanket of unease.
