The sun peeks over the rolling hills of rural Kentucky, casting a warm glow over the quilt-like pattern of farmland and woods. It's another new day in 1885, and Ada Palmer, a woman of twenty-three years, rises with the dawn.

Ada's day starts in the cozy, rustic farmhouse she's called home for her entire life. The house is a small symphony of morning noises – kids playing, the crackling fire in the wood stove, and the gentle creak of the wooden floors under Ada's worn leather boots. She places a pot of water on the stove to boil, then walks outside to start her day.
