Lauren Bacall, 1945

"Whatever it is, face it. Face it! Head-on!" - Lauren Bacall

This perspective, in many ways, captures Lauren. She didn't shy away from problems or issues. And she stood up for her beliefs and feelings. Such a way of living earned Lauren a blend of adjectives from others. But that didn't impact how she acted. Lauren did as she wanted to do.

In one of her first public decisions of doing what she felt was best, Lauren chose to marry Humphrey Bogart. She was a young actress at the time, just 20 years old. He was a star actor, a household name with many awards. He was also twenty-five years older than Lauren. It was a relationship that came with many challenges and much criticism early on. Yet, in describing her time with Humphrey, or Bogie, as she called him, Lauren said, "In my eleven years as his wife I knew the greatest happiness of my life. I have never known quite that quality of pure happiness since."
